The Ved\u0101\u1e45gas and Upavedas are collections of texts that augment and apply the Vedas as a comprehensive system of sacred living. Jyotisha Ved\u0101\u1e45ga delineates auspicious timing for holy rites. Kalpa Ved\u0101\u1e45ga defines public rituals in the \u015arauta and \u015aulba S\u016btras, domestic rites in the G\u1e5bihya S\u016btras and religious law in the Dharma \u015a\u0101stras. Four other Ved\u0101\u1e45gas ensure the purity of mantra recitation, through knowledge of phonetics, grammar, poetry and the way of words. The Upavedas expound profound sciences: Arthaveda unfolds statecraft; \u0100yurveda sets forth medicine and health; Dhanurveda discusses military science; G\u0101ndharvaveda illumines music and the arts; and Sth\u0101patyaveda explains architecture.
