They define the codes of conduct by which we harness our instinctive forces and cultivate the innate, pristine qualities of our soul. Aum.<br><br>BH\u0100SHYA<br>The yamas and niyamas are scriptural injunctions for all aspects of thought and behavior. They are advice and simple guidelines, not commandments. The ten yamas, defining the ideals of chary\u0101, are: 1) ahi\u1e41s\u0101, \u201cnoninjury,\u201d do not harm others by thought, word or deed; 2) satya, \u201ctruthfulness,\u201d refrain from lying and betraying promises; 3) asteya, \u201cnonstealing,\u201d neither steal nor covet nor enter into debt; 4) brahmacharya, \u201cdivine conduct,\u201d control lust by remaining celibate when single, leading to faithfulness in marriage; 5) ksham\u0101, \u201cpatience,\u201d restrain intolerance with people and impatience with circumstances; 6) dh\u1e5biti, \u201csteadfastness,\u201d overcome nonperseverance, fear, indecision and changeableness; 7) day\u0101, \u201ccompassion,\u201d conquer callous, cruel and insensitive feelings toward all beings; 8) \u0101rjava, \u201chonesty,\u201d renounce deception and wrongdoing; 9) mit\u0101h\u0101ra, \u201cmoderate appetite,\u201d neither eat too much, nor consume meat, fish, fowl or eggs; 10) \u015baucha, \u201cpurity,\u201d avoid impurity in body, mind and speech.
