Its four principal denominations are \u015aaivism, \u015a\u0101ktism, Vaish\u1e47avism and Sm\u0101rtism. Aum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>BH\u0100SHYA<br>The world\u2019s billion Hindus, one-sixth of the human family, are organized in four main denominations, each distinguish\u00aded by its Su\u00adpreme Deity. For Vaish\u1e47avites, Lord Vish\u1e47u is God. For \u015aai\u00advites, God is \u015aiva. For \u015a\u0101ktas, Goddess \u015aakti is su\u00adpreme. For Sm\u0101r\u00adtas, liberal Hindus, the choice of Deity is left to the devotee. Each has a multitude of guru lineages, religious leaders, priesthoods, sacred literature, monastic communities, schools, pilgrimage centers and tens of thousands of temples. They possess a wealth of art and architecture, philosophy and scholarship. These four sects hold such divergent be\u00adliefs that each is a complete and independent religion. Yet, they share a vast heritage of culture and belief\u2014karma, dharma, reincarnation, all-pervasive Di\u00advinity, tem\u00adple worship, sac\u00adra\u00adments, manifold Deities, the guru-\u015bishya tradition and the Vedas as scriptural authority.
